Faculty & Staff Membership   FAQ

  1. Is the cost of my membership taxed?
    No, University employees are not taxed on the cost of their membership.
  2. What do I need to do to enroll my same-sex domestic partner?
    If you have not already completed the certification process you need to contact Benefits Administration at www.miami.edu/benefits or 305-284-6832 for assistance. Once you have received the certification we can process the application.
    If you have already completed the certification process, please bring a copy of the certification along with your membership application for processing.
  3. What is the reciprocity policy on using both the Gables and Medical Wellness Center?
    Employees will join their assigned campus wellness facility. Spouses/same-sex domestic partners and/or dependants will follow the employee’s enrollment. Employees, spouses/same-sex domestic partners and dependents will receive full reciprocity benefits to utilize both the Medical and Gables campus wellness facilities. When at their non-assigned facility, employees will adhere to polices and the rate structure for additional services not included as part of the basic membership package at that facility.
  4. If I am already a member at the Gables Wellness Center will I need to complete a new membership for the Medical Wellness Center?
    University of Miami employees will join their assigned campus wellness facility. Spouses/same-sex domestic partners and/or dependents will follow the employee’s enrollment. Employees, spouses/same-sex domestic partners and dependents will receive full reciprocity benefits to utilize both the Medical and Coral Gables campus wellness facilities. When at their non-assigned facility, employees will adhere to polices and the rate structure for additional services not included as part of the basic membership package at that facility.
  5. Can I join the facility if I am classified as a UM affiliate (temp, contractor, visitor, observer)?
    You will be able to join as a Community Member.
  6. How will my membership be deducted from my paycheck?
    Once a month for monthly paid and twice a month for bi-weekly paid employees.
  7. Can two employees sign-up together and receive the employee plus one discount?
    No, each employee must sign up individually. Employees will only receive the plus one discount only is a spouse/SSDP/dependent enrolls with them.
  8. My spouse also works for UM. Can we sign-up as Employee +1?
    You must each sign up as an individual employee if you wish to participate in the SHAPEUP program. If you do not want to participate in SHAPEUP you can sign up together.
  9. Can I freeze my membership?
    Yes, you can for a maximum of six months. To freeze your membership, you will need to complete the Frozen Membership Agreement of Understanding and submit to the Membership Office.

  1. Will the Spa and Juice Bar be available to a non-Medical Wellness Center member?
    Yes, you will be able to purchase spa services and food items at the juice bar without a membership.
  2. What type of classes are offered?
    There are a variety of classed offered at various times. To view the the Master Schedule of classes offered, please go to Fitness Classes/Class Schedules.
  3. Will there be childcare services available on site?
    No, there are no child care services available at this time.
