FAQ

Must I know how to swim to participate in aqua classes?
No.  Swimming is not part of a class. All that is required is that you enjoy being in the water.  If you feel uncomfortable about having your feet off of the pool bottom surface, then the instructor will assist you in adjusting your movement as needed.

Should I wear a bathing cap?
No.  A bathing cap will trap the heat of your body.  You will be doing cardio work and the heat you generate needs to escape.

What kinds of exercises are done in class?
We walk, jog, run, do cross country, etc.  In general, we do everything from a warm-up to high cardio movements.

Will I sweat?
Yes.  You will sweat although it may not feel like it because you're in the water.  So, bring a bottle of water to drink throughout the entire class.

I've done water aerobics before and I've never felt like I've had a work out.  Why?
You may have participated in a class that didn't provide any cardio work.  Or, maybe you didn't realize that in the water, your heart rate is different.  Due to the pressure of the water, one’s heart rate appears to be lower than when exercising on land.  As a result of that difference, Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) will be applied in the water instead of the typical heart rate count. All new participants will be oriented to use of the RPE Scale for the purpose of self-assessing exercise intensity.

Water doesn't look like a "hard" workout.  Is it?
Water provides tremendous resistance.  Track teams utilize aquatic exercise to train as do other athletes. The resistance of the water is 12 times greater than air.

Does water aerobics exercise my entire body?
Unlike many other exercise options, a water aerobics class works your entire body.  And, you can make your own choice about the level of intensity you use.
